Social Media

My preferred choice of social media has for the most part always been Facebook. The reason for this has been mainly because it is the preferred social media choice of the majority of the youth in Somalia.
Facebook has been a useful tool for me to communicate to my peers and friends and also keep in touch with those who have left the country to study or work abroad. It has also been a great tool to keep updated on the changes my friends are going through in life and the milestones they have reached.  Another essential reason as to why I mainly use Facebook is that it allows me to share my views and feelings on the different challenges that face me as a Somali student.

Being a student in Somalia can be tough at times. Many days of school are lost throughout the year due to insecurity in the city and also closures of main roads that lead to the university I study at.
Sometimes as a student it feels as if though we don't have voices to let other know how were feeling.
Facebook gives me the ability to not only voice my opinions but also gives me the opportunity to find other like minded individuals who also are in the same situation as me.
This is a invaluable tool for students as it allows us to group together and pool ideas of how we can make being a student in Somalia less of a challenge in terms of everyday life around school. While social media is a great tool in connecting us, it also is undeniable that it hasn't caused a change in our society.

A few years ago no one knew what Facebook was or any form of social media, over the past few years social media use has rapidly expanded in Somalia and almost everyone you meet regardless of there financial standing has a Facebook account. I believe that the changes are both positive and negative. The positive changes brought about by social media are quite clear.
We are able to communicate easier then ever before, we can keep in touch with one another around the world and we can share are most fondest memories of one another with each other, and we can meet like minded individuals easier then ever before. It gives a sense of having our horizon expanded and opening up the rest of the world to us. However like most things in life there is a good and bad. The negative aspects of social media are the same here as in most parts of the world.

The spreading of fake news or disinformation can cause devastating effects on the society, especially one as fragile as Somalia. In Somalia many rumors are thrown around each day and no one knows what’s true or false.
Social media can fan the flames of disinformation because it can speed up the process of more people getting the wrong info and can lead to fighting among different groups.

All in all Somali youth have grown very fond of social media, and almost all of them use social media in one form or another.
It has become apart of daily life for many of the youth in Somalia and I believe that it will be a useful tool in helping Somalis see what the future holds by opening up a world of information and connections that no one could have ever imagined 10 years ago.
